Rolling onto the Octane carpet…

…comes a car that is unlikely ever to be built again…

No… Let’s not talk about soft tops flapping in the wind…

Let’s not talk about hair getting tousled with every acceleration…

Let’s not talk about how many seconds it takes to reach 100 km/h (although the answer is: less than the time it takes to close the soft top)...

We live in an age where electrification, emissions filters and efficiency call the shots. And, amidst this inevitable evolution, cars like this have disappeared.

This Mercedes-Benz C 63s Cabriolet is one of the last representatives of a dying breed: an elegant convertible, comfortable when you want it to be, absolutely wild when you ask it to be… powered by a 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 engine hand-built by AMG.

Originally registered in Portugal, delivered new there and always serviced by the manufacturer, with just one previous owner, it has clocked up a mere 16,000 kilometres – a figure so improbable it almost makes you look twice at the instrument panel.

Given that some cars rack up the kilometres… this one seems to have spent the last few years waiting for someone to write the story it deserves.

The specification matches this exclusivity.

The elegant grey paintwork blends perfectly with the black leather interior, the carbon fibre accents, the analogue IWC watch, the AMG sports seats, the Airscarf system for enjoying the open sky all year round, and a virtually comprehensive range of equipment.

Then there’s what no spec sheet can ever explain…

Lowering the roof on a spring morning. Selecting Race mode just because.

Hearing the V8 wake up without saying “…excuse me, please!?”…

Cruising along a country road with no particular destination in mind, simply because there are still engines that deserve to be heard and not just driven…

These are moments that don’t appear on the list of options, but only and exclusively in your memory.

But it’s not all positive – do you know what the only downside to this Mercedes is?

It’ll force you to answer the same question far too often at traffic lights: “Is that really a V8?”

Editor’s Note:

In our opinion, the C 63s Cabriolet will be one of the most sought-after AMG models of the coming decade. Not just because of the V8 engine, but because it marks the end of an era – the last generation in which Mercedes-AMG still built cars without apologising for excessive emissions. Those that seem expensive today… will probably be the bargains of tomorrow.
