Stepping onto the Octane carpet...

There are cars that span decades, and others that come to define an era.

The Jaguar XK140 undoubtedly belongs to the latter group.

At a time when Europe was still recovering from the scars of war and the car once again came to symbolise freedom, Jaguar perfected what was already considered one of the most extraordinary Grand Tourers of its time.

The result was the XK140.

More refined, more comfortable, more practical and, above all, even faster.

But this particular example deserves a much closer look.

At first glance, it is an elegant XK140 Drop Head Coupé.

Then the details that make all the difference begin to emerge.

The Jaguar Heritage certificate confirms that this is a genuine Special Equipment model, identified by the prefix ‘S’ in the chassis number and the designation ‘-8S’ on the engine – a specification known on the North American market as the XK140 MC (M = Modified / C = C-Type)

Produced on 25 October 1956, with left-hand drive, a manual gearbox and dispatched new to Jaguar Cars New York, this is not just any XK140. It is one of the versions most sought after by collectors and connoisseurs of the brand.

The Special Equipment (SE) designation was not merely a matter of nomenclature.

It represented a mechanical evolution directly inspired by the experience Jaguar had gained in motor racing, benefiting from the famous ‘C-Type’ cylinder head, higher-flow SU H8 carburettors, a lightweight flywheel and a power output of nearly 210 cv, as opposed to the 190 cv of conventional XK140s – figures that were absolutely extraordinary for a car from the 1950s.

What’s more, there are phrases that any collector loves to hear.

‘Matching numbers’ is one of them.

This XK140 MC(SE) still retains the original mechanical components with which it was built, exactly as confirmed by the Jaguar Heritage certificate.

At a time when so many cars have lost their identity through successive modifications, finding an example that preserves its authenticity is increasingly rare… and, naturally, increasingly prized.

And perhaps that is precisely why this Jaguar still holds its own almost seventy years on.

Because it was never just beautiful… It was also technically brilliant…

Please… Do be so kind…

Look at the endless bonnet…

At the wooden dashboard…

At the Smiths instruments…

At the large steering wheel…

Nothing was designed to impress the marketing department, but rather to serve those who truly loved to drive.

There is a notion – unfortunately very widespread – that a classic car must remain stationary, protected by a cover, to ensure its future value.

At Octane, we believe exactly the opposite!

The best classics are those that manage to offer two things at the same time.

Heritage… and memories.

Because a Jaguar XK140 wasn’t built to sit in a garage.

It was built to cross borders, climb mountain passes, travel along country roads and continue to do exactly what it was born to do.

To be driven…

Perhaps that is the biggest difference between buying a classic… and simply becoming its custodian for a few years.

Because, in truth, none of us truly owns a car like this.

We simply have the privilege of looking after it… until it is the next enthusiast’s turn.

Editor’s Note:

In the motoring world, value appreciation depends on fashion.

Then there are cars whose value appreciation depends on history.

In our opinion, the great Jaguar XKs clearly belong to the second group.

The market may rise…

It may correct itself…

It may even slow down for a while…

But it is unlikely ever to fail to recognise the historical significance of a genuine, fully documented XK140 Special Equipment (MC).

And for those who love classic cars, that is perhaps the best definition of an investment!
